Description:

White phosphorus lumps are a soft, waxy, translucent solid composed of tetrahedral P4 molecules. Highly pyrophoric, it spontaneously ignites in air above 30°C to produce dense white phosphorus pentoxide smoke and exhibits a faint green chemiluminescent glow during slow oxidation. Because it is insoluble in water but highly toxic and air-sensitive, it is stored permanently submerged under water.
